Angel Muriel

Ángel Muriel (born 1948, Cáceres, Spain) studied at the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Cáceres and later at the Central School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Madrid. He currently lives and works in Madrid.
Muriel’s work is deeply rooted in the Surrealist tradition and is often associated with the imaginative spirit of Salvador Dalí. Central to his practice is the exploration of the duality of love and death, as well as the fragility and transience of human existence. Through a subtle blend of irony and humour, he creates enigmatic worlds in which attraction and repulsion coexist, and figures continuously transform beyond the limits of physical reality.
His paintings are populated by sculptural, voluptuous bodies whose exaggerated proportions, elongated forms, and distorted limbs create a distinctive visual language. These metamorphic figures evoke an imagined dialogue between the elegance of Modigliani and the monumental sensuality of Botero. Muriel’s works invite reflection on the fleeting nature of life, the fluidity of identity, and the delicate boundaries between beauty, desire, and mortality.
