Antanas Sutkus

Antanas Sutkus (born in 1939 in Kluoniškiai, Kaunas District, Lithuania) is one of Lithuania's most distinguished photographers and a leading figure of the Lithuanian School of Photography. He began photographing while studying journalism at Vilnius University but soon moved beyond press photography to develop a distinctive artistic vision. In 1969, he founded the Lithuanian Society of Art Photography—the first organization of its kind in the Soviet Union—and led the country's photographic community for more than four decades. His artistic language was shaped by personal life experiences, his childhood in the Lithuanian countryside, and the ideals of humanist photography. Throughout his work, everyday life becomes a universal reflection on human dignity, existence, and the passage of time. His most significant photographic project, People of Lithuania, sensitively documents the lives of ordinary Lithuanians during the second half of the twentieth century. Sutkus gained international recognition through his 1965 series Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in Lithuania, with his iconic portrait of Sartre becoming one of the best-known images of the philosopher and later inspiring a sculpture installed near the National Library of France in Paris. His intuitive approach, exceptional ability to establish a genuine connection with his subjects, and remarkable sensitivity to authentic human moments distinguish him as one of Europe's foremost humanist photographers. Today, his archive of more than one million negatives is regarded as one of the most important photographic collections documenting everyday life in twentieth-century Eastern Europe. Antanas Sutkus's photographs are held in major museum and private collections worldwide and are widely recognized as landmarks of both Lithuanian and international humanist photography.
